The specialty channel have put together the writing team of David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) and Josh Pate (Surface, Falling Skies) to adapt Pohl’s book into a scripted series, according to Variety.
“Gateway” tells the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien species, at least first contact with the technology of the long-gone aliens simply known as Heechee.
The story follows events after an outer space prospector and amateur archaeologist named Robinette Broadhead uncovers an asteroid that contains a whole arsenal of Heechee spaceships and other technologies that have been left abandoned for centuries by this unknown space-faring race of beings. All the events leading up the discovery and all those after it are chronicled in the novel.
Entertainment One Television, Universal Cable and the De Laurentiis Company will produce and provide oversight for the project.
“Gateway” is just one of several new scripted shows picked up by the Syfy Channel over the last several months. Also included for pickup and novel adaptation are “Childhood’s End,” “The Expanse,” (both to premiere on December 14, 2015) and “The Magicians.” Actors Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) and Colm Meaney (Star Trek: TNG/DS9, Hell on Wheels) will headline the cast for Arthur C. Clarke’s “Childhood’s End”, while Shohreh Aghdashloo (Grimm) and Thomas Jane (Hung, The Punisher) will star in “The Expanse.”
