Beginning with the required teaser after the end of last week’s episode and followed by its reminder on Fox in prime time in nearly every available commercial spot for the next six days the airways were flooded with the image of a youngish red-haired lad sitting across from Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) in an interrogation room exuding an air of maniacal not yet seen among the bevy of baddies on the show. And of course there was that chilling demented laugh that was obviously geared to whet the appetite of Joker enthusiasts.
There was and remains one problem however. Executive producer Bruno Heller continues to be a bit vague on the question “Is this The Joker?” Even after the less than revealing episode aired this week Heller remains closed lipped on whether or not viewers were able to witness the arrival of Batman’s most notorious and yet best beloved nemesis. The only hint Heller would give was to say that perhaps Jerome is in the early development of becoming The Joker and perhaps he isn’t .... but, “This is not a trick.”
Well Bruno the fans certainly hope it isn’t. If it turns out that Jerome is who many of us think him to be then the entire backstory for Jerome is in serious question as all followers of The Batman universe know the infamous character called Jack, Jerome, whatever, has more stories of his past than Catwoman has lives. It will be fun to see how all that unfolds over the upcoming segments. It certainly adds punch to a show already pumped up to the max.
Whatever the final outcome is the series promises to deliver on Jerome in future episodes and fans will be seeing more of actor Cameron Monaghan. Until his true identity is finally unveiled perhaps we all should just sit back, relax, tune in and ask the question, “Why so serious!”
